Aravani Art Project has an archive of stories from many members of the transgender community who recount their experience. The artwork Not So Saree was conceptualized from one of those stories of the everyday, the discarded, the old and forgotten, poignant lives they lead. A group of trans women are portrayed celebrating their sisterhood and friendships, sharing anecdotes of how they mustered the courage to drape their bodies in a piece of fabric, often regarded to be a symbol of femininity. The work shows two characters swirling together, and the other characters are distant, exuding ambiguity and a discerning loneliness. These emotions are felt by a community, who either display a childlike excitement or contemplate the tragedy of being unable to express themselves through a garment. For transwomen, wearing a saree becomes a possibility of embracing their womanhood that is otherwise rejected by social constructs.
