DO
DO (Nikunj Prajapati) is an urban artist from Ahmedabad, India, whose practice is marked by a deep commitment to experimentation and site-specific creation. He frequently blurs the lines between abstraction and figuration, consistently resulting in works characterized by three-dimensionality. In his work, he uses non-traditional and industrial materials, often incorporating mediums such as aerosol paint, custom-cut vinyl, retro-reflective stickers, resilient PU foam, and thermoplastic paint. This material palette allows him to achieve textures and visuals that interact with their environment.
DO's graffiti practice draws heavily upon the disciplines of typography and lettering within the urban contemporary art movement. This influence is most visible in his distinctive signature tags, "TryTryTry" and "treetreetree." These tags are instantly recognizable by their use of intense repetition and the dramatic, evocative quality of the drip effect. Through the deliberate and rhythmic repetition of these words, DO engages in a conceptual dialogue with the public perception of markings on the walls. He intentionally uses this technique to challenge the conventional view of graffiti as mere vandalism, inviting viewers to look beyond the act and consider the meaning and form. His choice to render these markings in vivid greens and moss-like colours on surfaces provoke a moment of critical reflection on urgent matters of environmental conservation and the encroachment of nature within the urban sprawl.
Known for his murals spread across the walls of India and the world, the artist has worked in cities such as Stockholm, Colombo, Dubai and Abu Dhabi. He has contributed to major cultural events in India, including the St+art India Festivals, the Kochi Biennale, and the Serendipity Arts Festival. He has collaborated with popular brands such as Meta, Miral, Blossa, Noon.com, PayPal, Levi's, Gucci, Waste Warriors, Pepsi and has also partnered with Instagram and Google for campaigns, often executed in collaboration with St+art India Foundation and XXL Collective. DO’s works have been exhibited at OUTSIDERS, Gallery XXL, 2023; sans sentense, Gallery XXL, 2024; You Cannot Miss This, 2024; and was a part of the Space Studio Residency in 2023.
