Bhushan Bhombale
Based in Mumbai, Bhushan Bhombale is originally from Bhusawal, Maharashtra. His artistic inquiry began in his childhood, where he experimented with materials like rice glue and discarded items to create posters of superheroes and religious icons. His early exposure to board painting in Mumbai and working in his father’s tyre repair shop shaped his tactile engagement with materials.
Employing recycled material, Bhushan sculpts using paper, wood, rubber, steel and metal to arrive at accidental forms through experimentation in techniques of artmaking that he refers to as an authored style. He draws from a lineage of collage and decoupage artistry, expanding it through papier-mash works on flat surfaces. Influenced by Mexican artist Gabriel Orozco, his work captures the fleeting imagery of plants and landscapes encountered in everyday life, delving into abstraction to reveal the essence of nature amidst shifting light and shadow.
Inspired by the tropical environment and the transformative effects of heat and degradation on materials, he questions the imposition of colonial aesthetics and endeavors to reclaim visual languages. Experimenting with painting techniques and surfaces, he juxtaposes vibrant forms against muted backgrounds, reminiscent of concrete patinas during monsoons. His works serve as a visual narrative of his experiences and observations, inviting viewers to contemplate the intersection of urbanisation, culture, environment, and identity.
Bhushan completed his graduation from the L.S. Raheja School of Art, Mumbai in 2013 and pursued a Diploma in Art Education from the Sir J. J. School of Art, Mumbai in 2014.
