Biografia

Deep S Roy is a lens-based artist who takes interest in how we make sense of this world and live from one day to another. With a master’s in finance, Deep became attuned to the invisible structures that shape how individuals are seen and how they see themselves.

Deep grew up in a region cut off from the world, with international borders on all sides and only one operational corridor to the rest of the country. Collecting and keeping objects, born out of deprivation and sudden overload, became a part of his life. In doing so, he became curious about the world he sees and others see. His practice begins at home, as his work brings together a collection of images and sculpted objects to create a dialogue between the real and the surreal. He hands the work over to viewers as something to be looked at and used, a way of expanding cultural vocabulary and social conversation. What happens after the handover is not his: the work finishes forming in places and situations he will not be present for.

Deep is a Co-Founder and long-standing member of the Egaro Photo Festival, where since 2017 he has developed exhibitions, public programming, and visual storytelling workshops to support emerging photographers in Northeast India. In film production, he served as Assistant Director of Photography on the Kokborok-language feature film Khaani, which was screened at the Kolkata International Film Festival 2025, as well as the short film Love & Aachar. His creative projects include Boshonto, a portrait and still life series crafted from wild spring blooms, and C.O.N. (2022–2026), a conceptual series examining data in modern life using sculpted objects against saturated backdrops. The artist has participated in multiple workshops at institutions including BICAR, Offset Projects, and KNMA.
